I was shocked to read the news that a plastic surgeon had told a newspaper in India that the cost of plastic surgery is only 1.4% of the total cost of the operation, while the cost is 6.3% in the US.
The news is shocking for those who work for the country’s leading plastic surgeons, who are already struggling to pay for their plastic surgeries.
“If you look at the data that is out there, it’s only 1% of what we’re spending,” said Dr Sanjay Duggal, the chief operating officer of Plastic Surgery Associates.
“It’s just not the right message.”
Dr Duggals experience is different to most, but he believes the issue is not limited to plastic surgery.
“I’ve seen the issue of underfunding of plastic surgeries, and I think that is a systemic issue.
It’s not just one surgeon or one clinic.
It is an issue across the board.
It needs to change.
It should be 100% transparent,” he said.
Dr Diggals surgery was done at the University of Michigan’s Dr Duggalos surgery is a six-year-old and a resident of Cleveland.
He has worked at the university since 2007 and has also worked in the Cleveland Clinic, the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the University Hospital of Cleveland Medical Center.
He is currently working as a senior fellow at the American Association of Plastic Surgeons.
Dr Srivastava said the issue was brought up by Dr Diggal during a recent seminar for a fellowship he was teaching at the Cleveland clinic.
“He said, ‘If you don’t see any change in the cost, then we are not going to fund it,’ ” Dr Srivashan said.
“The surgeon said, no, we will, but it will be a very modest change.”
In India, plastic surgery can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $1 million.
Many surgeons and dentists have been asking the government to provide better incentives for their operations, and to help pay for them, because they say there is a lack of money in the country.
The government has not responded.
